I've been playing this game for years but could never come up with a good strategy. I guess I've been playing wrong since I can only beat the computer maybe 10% of the time (on normal).

My usual strategy was developing domestic resources with railroads and depots. This is incorrect I assume?

I really want to get back to playing Imperialism 1. I had the original software, but now I have Windows 7. If I download it will I be able to play without a bunch of tweaking? I am not totally computer literate, just know the basics to do my stuff. Thanks

Regarding Victory Conditions: Just when does the "Year" Catogory no longer kick in? I have never won a game before the turn of the 19th Century, so my point total never includes the year I win by. Does anyone know? Thank you...

Trying this map as a Europe map, it doesn't have diamonds in those provinces.

Well what can I say? Imperialism was one of the first ever games I got bought for me when I was a kid. I loved it. I didn't really have any other exposure to strategy games prior to it so when I got it it was like wow. Since then I've been an avid strategy gamer but I always yearned for imperialism, from getting madly frustrated that you can't upgrade your factories for lack of resources to the pleasure of your first country becoming a colony so cool. So I really want to join this site, because I had trade empires and imperialism 2 but I sucked at both of them, and I'd like to learn to win. Also and more importantly imperialism is still completely playable for me and I really want to discuss it.

The number one thing on anyones mind should be Industrialization! Dont bring in every wood or cotton you can find, it uses too much labor and steel to expand the lumber mill. Instead, only build depots next to the city tiles in resource rich provinces, expand the funiture factory or cloth to 20 and rake in the free products!
Use the saved money and steel to buy more steel and build weapons.

Hey guys, have you got a mirror on that map editor link? I'd love to get my hands on it if possible, but that link doesn't seem to work any more.
